Some concern citizens of Karonga have strongly warned those attacking leader of Citizens for Transformation (CFT) Timothy Mtambo on his decision to support the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) candidate in Karonga central constituency by-election race Leonard Mwalwanda to stop.

Soon after his endorsement, Mtambo who is also the minister of unity and civic education has been seen drumming up support for the MCP candidate every weekend.

The development has angered many Malawians including some United Transformation Movement (UTM) followers as well as some CFT members.

The group argued that being a minister of unity and civic education Mtambo was not suppose to be on forefront doing campaign for any candidate but unifying them.

According to them, Karonga central constituency is prone to political violence therefore there was need to have someone to calm the situation and that was Mtambo and his ministry.

“He was not suppose to do that. MCP, CFT and UTM are under tonse alliance. Endorsing MCP it means Mtambo is against UTM,” some argued.

However, the concerned Karonga citizens back Mtambo for the decision saying UTM would have done the same.

Speaking within this publication, the group leader, Steven SimsoKwe said the Karonga central seat was for MCP therefore it must go to MCP.

He said there was need for any party or organization under Tonse alliance candidate to support the MCP candidate as one way of paying respect to the late.

“Dr. Cornelius Mwalwanda was MCP until his death. He was among the politicians who sacrificed a lot to Tonse alliance during campaign. Meaning MCP was suppose to finish this term. And that’s why Mtambo and his CFT came up with that decision,” he said.

Simsokwe further said those attacking Mtambo are paid some politicians who are trying hard to destroy his reputation.

“Mtambo has done a lot for this country especially by making sure that DPP is out of government. He is our hero just like the late Chakufwa Chihana therefore it is sad to see other politicians trying to cripple his vision. As residents of Karonga we don’t see any problem with his decision” he added.
