As one way to implement government efforts in addressing deforestation in Malawi, Raising World Family (RWF) Church in Kasungu has embarked on tree planting exercise in the district.

Led by their Bishop Felix Nyirenda, the Church planted over 300 tree around the area of village headman chiteyeye, which is within Traditional Authority Kaomba.

Speaking in an interview, Bishop Nyirenda said it is the duties of the Church to protect the environment which was created by God.

According to Nyirenda, God created a man to take care of everything in the world that’s why He made him to be above all the creatures.

“ What we are doing here is what God wants us to do. As Church, we must be on forefront in the management of the environment. If we are leave everything in hands of government, the situation will not improve in conservation of natural resources,” Nyirenda.

He added that their plan is to make sure that every family members including children [with the help of their parents] should plant his or her tree.

Councilor Bright Ngalande said as the council they’re impressed with the initiative, adding that it spreads awareness about the importance of planting trees and increasing green areas in Kasungu.

He also praised the Church efforts to involve each and every family members in the initiative saying it will help the exercise to cover a big area.

“This is not a simple exercise. It is unique and as the council, we are encouraging other churches in the district to emulate the example done by Raising World Family Church,” said Ngalande.

He then disclosed that the council will hold the same exercise within the month of January in different areas of the district.

President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera launched the tree planting exercise in Nkhata Bay district in December, 2020.
