The Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) on Wednesday, received over 100 members in Mzuzu who have defected from former ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), United Democratic Front (UDF) and Freedom Party (FP).
The group were officially welcomed by AFORD president, Enoch Chihana.
Number of defecting were women who use to dance traditional dances during political rallies.
One of the Freedom Party senior member who joined AFORD, Pacharo Mponera said they want to have one strong party to represent the northern region, hence the decision.
“UDF is strong in the east, DPP south, while MCP central region. In the north we are divided that’s why we look irrelevant in the political arena. It is time now to have one strong party,” said Mponera.
Janet Mkandawire from DPP said nepotism, tribalism have locked the former ruling party that’s why they have defected.
She denied rumours that they have given K5, 000 as a token to join AFORD
In his welcoming speech, Chihana said the group has made a best decision ever.
He disclosed that the party will embark on village to village campaign starting from January 2021 in order to hook more legislatures and councillors in the region.
“Our goal is to have enough and strong representative at council and MP level. In 2025 elections, AFORD will grab all sears in the north and run all councils,” he disclosed.
Why not plan to cover the whole Malawi so that Aford can win presidential elections? Why limit yourselves to the north? That’s being regionalistic.
