Vice-president Saulos Chilima has ordered a contractor of Chikwawa-Chapananga-Mwanza road to redesign and reconstruct the road, citing substandard work.
Chilima has issued the order today Monday when he was inspecting the road in Nsanje district.
Chilima said: “As we continue inspecting the progress of public projects, this morning I have deplored the poor and substandard works on the Chikwawa-Chapananga-Mwanza road.
“I have pressed on the Contractor, Plem Construction, to redesign the first 10 km that they have worked on so far as opposed to proceeding with the current poor design of the road.”
Chilima contended that its better to pay more on the road reconstruction and have a durable and quality road as opposed to what he has seen today.
“I have shot down the Contractor’s argument that the ‘poor’ design is because the road has less traffic. No. That’s a wrong mindset. It is like planning on the assumption that the people of this country will remain poor forever,” Chilima added.
Chilima further said he has since ordered the Plem contractors to go back to their drawing board and redesign what he calls poor road.
He is however, impressed with construction works of Nsanje-Marka road including the design. With the contractor saying that the road will be done in March, next year.
Chilima announced last week ago that he will be inspecting various developmental projects happing in the country.
Yesterday, he inspected Ntcheu-Sangano-Mwanza road.
